Since the dawn of humanity, animals have been hurt simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. They have done nothing wrong; they merely live according to the laws of nature. However, with the advent of humans, their habitats have been increasingly encroached upon. Some species have even become extinct. Among them, the thylacine is one of the worst cases. Once living on vast prairies, thylacines were happy and carefree. The arrival of humans changed all that. Due to extensive human land clearing and dwindling pastures for livestock, herbivores were forced to migrate to other grasslands. This led to increased predation by wolves, as they had less food available. In a bid to protect their livestock, farmers killed the wolves, and eventually, the last remaining thylacine was also slaughtered.
It was only much later that people realized the gravity of the thylacine's extinction. Efforts to protect the species through conservation were too little, too late. The thylacine was officially declared extinct in 1936, less than 50 days after the last known individual's death.
Not all animal extinctions are due to human killings, but some do result from environmental changes that humans have contributed to. Throughout history, humans have been cruel to animals, robbing them of their right to live. Now, there seems to be a growing awareness of the dangers of animal extinction. Unfortunately, some still exploit animals for financial gain, selling their fur and meat. But we cannot solely blame traders; consumers also share responsibility. If there was no demand, traders would not take the risk.
Humans continue to consume wild animals, such as snakes. If snakes were to become extinct, rodents would thrive unchecked, posing a significant threat to crops and possibly even to human health. The existence of every species has its biological significance within the natural food chain. Disrupting this chain can have severe consequences, including the unchecked breeding of certain species and potential threats to humanity. We must remember that protecting animals is, in fact, protecting ourselves.
