A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried.
Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said. “I‟m afraid so. I‟m in a big hurry and I can‟t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you‟re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I‟d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking, he heard the long loud noise of an alarm. It was from the bank. There had been a robbery (抢劫)! Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I‟m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought, he started to run. 注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为 150 左右;

As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!” And also at the moment,Arthur suddenly realized that the young man might be the bank robber. So Arthur didn’t stop, but continued to run until he saw a taxi. He stopped it, jumped in with the suitcase and said to the driver, “Go to the police station, please. The man shouting behind is the bank thief!‟‟ The taxi raced away like the wind.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur told the police what had happened. Obviously, the police had already learned about the robbery. They opened the suitcase and there was a large sum of money inside,as Arthur had expected. Then the police asked Arthur to describe the young man and the other suitcase. Later, with
the information, the police caught the robber. The police and the bank both thanked Arthur a lot. (Words 153)
As he was running, Arthur heard the young man shouting behind, “Stop, stop!”Thinking of the way the young man had behaved, he realized the young man might be the bank robber. So Arthur ran faster and stopped a taxi. The moment he got into the taxi, he told the driver the man shouting behind was the bank thief and asked him to
drive to the nearest police station. The driver followed what Arthur said and drove away.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur thanked the driver and directly went in. Just as Arthur was describing what had happened near the bank on the Park Avenue and reported the young man to the police, he heard a voice outside, “Help! Help!” To the surprise of Arthur, it was the young man. He had followed Arthur in another taxi. It turned out that the young man was innocent and inside the suitcases were just some clothes. Arthur felt embarrassed but the policemen thanked him anyway.(Words: 158)
Park Avenue, the bank
The young man, people, the bank thief
事件: suitcases, in the back seat, loud noise of an alarm, robbery, the shouts 在续写时, 除了注意原文给出的关键词, 还需要注意以下线索: 1. Why did the young man look worried?
2. What happened? But everyone had a different answer.
3. Arthur became frightened and without another thought, he started to run. 1.
(1) 所需阅读的短文词数在 350 以内;
(1) 与所给短文及段落开头语的衔接程度;
When I was eleven years old, I had a big accident. I get scared even now when I think about that time. I went skating near my house. There were many people, and I saw some of them falling on the ice.
It was my first time to go ice skating, so I was nervous. I was wondering how to skate. I went with a friend who was very skillful. He spent some time teaching me how to skate, but I didn’t learn much. He left me and skated all around. As soon as he left, I fell down. I envied the other people because they could skate well. I was bored because I kept falling so I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen.
Suddenly, I stepped on something that was not hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped there, I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die, but I did my best to grab something to get out from under the ice. I tried to grab the edge of the ice, but it was very difficult for an eleven-year-old.
It seemed like a very long time, like a year. Then, fortunately, someone helped me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up. So, I lived and I‟m still alive today.
I thanked him. At that time, my friend came back. I was annoyed at him because he was supposed to take care of me, but he didn’t. He was embarrassed. When I took a taxi home, the taxi driver was surprised and asked what had happened. I didn’t want to say anything because I was tired and scared. Even now, whenever I think about that time, I feel uncomfortable. I don‟t want to go skating again even now.

Mr Brown lived in a house less than two miles away from his office. He was therefore
able to drive home every day for lunch. Every time he drove in the middle of the day, he found cars were parked in the road outside his house, and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive two blocks farther before he could find a place to park. Then he had to walk home. This made him very angry.
He had put up a board which read “No Parking!” in the garden facing the road, but nobody seemed to pay attention to it. People only obeyed a police notice, but not a private one. There were no parked cars where there was a blue board with white letters on it: Police Notice—No Parking!
Mrs Brown suggested that he should steal a police notice. But he dared not, being afraid of going to prison. She then suggested that he make one just like a police notice. He said he was not a policeman and couldn’t use the word “police”. He decided that he must find a way out and started thinking hard. For several days, the smell of paint filled the house. One night he showed his wife a new notice board. It was painted in white letters on a blue board: Polite Notice—No Parking! “Oh,” Mrs Brown said, “but you told me you weren’t going to use the word „police‟. That‟s exactly like a police notice.”
“Is it?” he asked. “Look again.”
She began to laugh, “You are really rather clever.”

My mother used to ask me what the most important part of the body is. Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, “My ears, Mommy.”
She said, “No. Many people are deaf. But they are doing well in their life. You keep thinking about it and I will ask you again soon.”
Several years passed before she asked me again. Since making my first attempt, I had contemplated(深思)the correct answer. So this time I told her, “Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.”
She looked at me and told me, “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct
because there are many people who are blind.”
Over the years my mother asked me a couple more times and always her answer was: “No, but you are getting smarter every year, my child.”
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Everybody was crying. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say our final goodbye to grandpa. She asked me, “Do you know the most important body part yet, my dear?”
I was surprised when she asked me this on this occasion. I always thought this was a game between her and me. She saw the confusion on my face and told me, “This question is very important. How you answer it shows whether you have learned about life. For every body part you gave me in the past, I have told you were wrong and I have given you a reason why. But today is the day you will know the answer.”
I look puzzled.
“All your previous answers-ears, eyes, hands, heart... They are all very important to yourself. But this time I need you to think of something that is important to others.”

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow(乌鸦) perched(栖息) on their window.
The father asked his son, “What is this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it‟s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this?” At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒) was felt in the son‟s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff (生硬回绝) . “It‟s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father
again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times „IT IS A CROW‟. Are you not able to understand this?”
A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的) diary, which he had maintained since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son.

I was touched through experiences, memories, books, stories, animals, angels, and most of all other people. People have moved me and molded(对……影响重大) me with moments of love and examples of kindness.
One time on the day before Christmas many years ago when I was a minimum wage mill(工厂) worker, I found myself with very little money and very little time to buy my small children a few simple toys. I knew that they would have to be cheap ones and I hoped my children would like them. I hated not having enough to give them more. I hated being poor. And I hated feeling bad at Christmas rather than happy.
I pulled into a store parking lot and counted my money again. It wasn’t much but maybe I could get something small with it. As I was getting out of the car I noticed the Salvation Army(救世军) bell ringer at the entrance. I felt bad again because I didn’t feel I could spare anything to give him. I started walking towards the entrance when two cars pulled into empty parking spots in front of me. The first was a shiny, new Cadillac and I felt a twinge of jealousy when I saw it. “How nice,” I thought, “Would it be to have enough money to buy a car like that.” The second car, though, was an ancient sedan(轿车) more beat-up and rusty than the one I was driving.
A man hopped(冲) out of the Cadillac and hurried into the store right past the bell ringer without a second glance. Out of the old sedan came a young mother with three small children in tow(紧随着) . Her clothes looked as worn out as her car, yet she stopped in front of the bell ringer, smiled, opened her purse, and dropped a bill in his red kettle(钱罐) .

It was long before I went skating once again, accompanied by one of my friends. This time I was careful and cautious, and my friend took special care of me. I was so fortunate this time that I managed not to fall down. Gradually I learned to skate well and became skillful. I felt very confident and no longer scared. However, ever since then I haven't found any time to go skating, it was not because I do not like skating, but because I am too busy working. I've learned a lot from these two skating experiences. We all have moments of desperation. But if we can face them bravely, that's when we find out how strong we really are. Whatever you do, you must have the patience to do it as well as the skill. Remember: never get conceited because of victory or lose heart in case of failure.
Why did Mrs Brown say her husband was really rather clever? Because she found that he had written a notice which looked exactly like a police notice. He made a blue board with white letters on it, but it was not a real police notice. Being afraid of going to prison. Mr Brown certainly dared not use the word “police ” instead of “police notice” He was quite clever ,wasn’t he ?
If the police discovered that the Browns using a police notice ,they would feel angry and punish them. It was a crime because he offended the police, passing himself off as a policeman. But Mr Brown remained very calm . he would ask the policeman to look at the board carefully. The policeman would burst out laughing when they realized what had happened .
“My dear, the most important body part,”she said, “is your shoulder”, “Is it holds up your head ?” I asked. “No,it is because it can hold the head of a friend or loved one when they cry”. she replied, “Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on sometime in life. My dear I only hope that you have enough love and happiness” I saw her eyes wet up with tears.
Paragraph 2
“Mom,I understand. And you can cry on my shoulder too.” And silently ,my mother put her head on my shoulder and started to cry. It was not heavy at all, and the wetness didn’t make me uncomfortable either. In fact when her warm tears damped my shoulder ,I felt the pain in her heart ,and I knew how hurt and lonely and vulnerable she was at that moment. I felt important ,I felt like a man . I was there when someone I loved dearly needed me most .
Paragraph 1:
