听力原文: Challenges of Working and Living in a Developing Country Living in a developing country can be a challenging and, at times, an uncomfortable experience. However, it can also be rewarding to the development needs of the region and your career. We have done some researches for this issue and want to share with you before you apply for a job and live in a developing country. [1]First, you will find different customs, religions and cultures. Keep in mind that your way may not be the only way or even the “right” way of communicating across cultural and, [2]in some cases, language barriers can be frustrating. You will experience cultural beliefs which may be very different to your own, from varying perspectives on gender, different working styles through to religious practices. [3]The tip for you is to investigate the country you are applying to before you go—understand the importance of religion, the status of women, hierarchy, common work practices etc. Second,

regardless of whether your assignment is in an urban, industrial or rural area, [4]you should expect basic living conditions. This could quite likely mean limited electricity and hot water, shared facilities including bathroom and toilet, and probably mosquitoes and other “wild” life. [5]You may have to do without some of the entertainment you are used to—DVDs, downloading, pubs and bars. The tip is to prepare entertainment or luxuries you cannot live without before you go, for example,

sporting equipment, a fully loaded e-book reader, bed sheets or 50+ sun cream. [6]Third, one of the most important things to consider is whether you can survive without your family and friends. If you can’t bear the thought of being separated from your family, partner, boyfriend or girlfriend for months at a time then you need to consider whether to apply such a job or think of other ways in which you can get support while in country. The tip is to get involved in country with new support networks—[7]join sporting groups, and attend social events with your colleagues. Fourth, just like starting a new job and working in a new workplace will be a new and sometimes daunting experience. [8]There may be different working hours, informal communication styles, a lack of resources, more responsibility than you are used to and complex social issues such as gender inequality and corruption. The tip is to research the country and understand that what you will experience when working within the current environment—not changing it overnight, [9]and deal with these difficulties with a flexible attitude. Fifth and the last, getting sick is a part of living and working in developing countries. A lot of support is provided before, during and after your application to ensure you stay as healthy as possible (vaccinations, personalized medical kits, check ups). [10]The tip is to ensure you follow health advice provided by your organization and local healthcare institutions. I hope these issues are useful for you when considering and preparing for working and living in a developing country. Thank you.

My name’s Jon Anderson. W: Yes, Mr. Anderson. What sort of thing were you looking for? M: [2]Two-bedroomed house with garden. W: Well, yes, sir. That shouldn’t be any problem. Just to let you know that our main areas, the main areas we deal with, are the city centre itself... M: City centre... uh-huh. W: And the north suburbs.M: Oh well... we were most interested in the Northern areas actually. W: Right... Yes. What sort of price were you thinking of? M: Well... could you give me some idea? W: Certainly. It really ranges from £250 per month. M: Only £250.W: Yes, to about £500 depending on a number of different factors. And a garage pushes up the price.M: Right. Well, we wouldn’t necessarily need one. [2]I think about £350 a month would be our limit. W: OK. Well, would you like to have a look at a couple of properties, sir? M: Yes, that’d be great. W: Looking at our files. I think we’ve got two which might suit you.M: Hang on. I’ll just get a pen. Right.W: OK Well, there’s one on West Park Road which is £325 a month. M: Are the bills included? W: Well, [3]that one just includes the water bill. 13.

A.He wants a two-bedroomed house with garage. B.He wants a three-bedroomed house with garden. C.He is interested in a house in the city centre. D.He accepts the rent of the house below £350.

14.

A.Gas bill. B.Water bill. C.Electricity bill. D.Telephone rental.

A.He needs to give a letter from the bank.

B.He needs a reference letter from the last landlord. C.He should give a 2 months’ notice of moving in. D.He will have to pay for the contract.

How can I help you?M: [6]I understand that the school organizes... umm, trips to different...W: Yes, [7]we run five every month: three during weekends and two Wednesday afternoon trips.M: What sort of places?W: Well, obviously it varies, but always places of historical interest and also which offer a variety of shopping, because our students always ask about that... And

[8]then we go for ones where we know there are guided tours, because this gives a good focus for the visit. M: Do you travel far? W: Well, we’re lucky here, obviously, because we’re able to say that all our visits are less than three hours drive. M: How much do they cost?W: Again it varies—between five and fifteen pounds a head, depending on distance. M: Ah ha...W: Oh, and [9]we do offer to arrange special trips if, you know, there are more than twelve people. M: Oh right, I’ll keep that in mind. And what are the times normally? W: We try to keep it pretty fixed so that, that students get to know the pattern. We leave at 8:30 a.m. and return at 6 p.m. We figure it’s best to keep the day fairly short. M: Oh yes. And what visits are planned for this term? W: Right, well I’m afraid the schedule hasn’t been printed out yet, but we have confirmed the dates and planned the optional extra visits which you can also book in advance if you want to. M: Oh that’s all right. If you can just give some idea of the weekend ones so I can, you know, work out when to see friends, etc. W: Oh sure. Well, the first one is St Ives. That’s on February 13th and we’ll have only sixteen places available because we’re going by minibus. M: Oh right... yeah... that sounds good. W: Then there’s a London trip on February 20th and we’ll be taking a medium-sized coach so there’ll be forty-five places on that.M: Oh, I’ve already been there.W: [10]We’re going to Salisbury on March 18th and that’s always a popular one, so we’re taking the large coach with fifty seats... M: Oh, good.W: And the last one is to Bath on March 23rd. W: Oh yes. Is Bath the Roman city? M: Yes, that’s right, and that’s in the sixteen-seater minibus. W: OK, well that’s great, thanks for all that... M: My pleasure. By the way, if you want more information about any of the trips, have a look in the student newspaper.
