Half of the world’s coral reefs(珊瑚礁) have died in the last 30 years. Now scientists are racing to ensure that the rest survive. Even if global warning were to stop right now, scientists predict that more than 90% of corals will die by 2050. If no major steps are taken to address the problem, the reefs may be headed for total extinction(灭绝).

The planet’s health depends on the survival of coral reefs. They are often described as the rainforests of the sea, because they provide shelter for a wide variety of sea life. In addition, the reefs serve as barriers that protect coastlines from the full force of powerful storms.

Corals are used in medical research for cures to diseases. They are key to local economies as well, since the reefs attract tourists, the fishing industry, and other businesses, bringing in billions of dollars.

Corals are particularly sensitive to changes in temperature. A rise of just 1 to 2 degrees can force the corals to drive out the algae(水藻). Then the corals

turn white in a process called bleaching. Corals can recover from shortterm bleaching, but longterm bleaching can cause permanent damage. In 1998, when sea surface temperatures were the highest in recorded history, coral reefs around the world suffered the most severe bleaching. It is estimated that even under the best of conditions, many of these coral reefs will need decades to recover.

Although reefs face other threats from pollution, industrial activities, and overfishing, it is global climate change that most concerns scientists. Scientists remain hopeful that it’s not too late to save the reefs, and some are moving ahead on experiments to accomplish that goal Which of the following is the best title for the passage()

【精析】A当only+状语从句位于句首时,主句应用部分倒装结构,即将情态动词、助动词或be动词提到主语前;根据句意可知,出发所表示的动作发生在暴风雨停了之后,所以此处应用一般过去时。故选A

故选A

39.见解析Part-time Jobs In contemporary society, college students' taking part-time jobs has become a hot topic. It has a great influence on their life. I believe there are both benefits and drawbacks. Clearly, in addition to getting an income, college students taking part-time jobs may enjoy a more exciting lifestyle. as they can meet people from all walks of life and develop a sense of responsibility which can't be learned in the classroom. On the other hand, the negative effects of part-time jobs are also obvious. Students who take part-time jobs may spend less time focusing on study, and if they seek to excel in both the part-time jobs and study, the busy life they lead may put their health at risk. Besides, the society is much more complicated than they have expected, and they sometimes may be exposed to danger. In my opinion, college students ought to keep a balance between academic study and part-time jobs, and always bear in mind that a student's priority is to acquire knowledge at school.
